Hello and Welcome to Performing Shakespeare!

It’s all in the DELIVERY!

I’m a Shakespearean Actor and Director with 15 years experience specializing in performing Shakespeare.

Perhaps the most thrilling thing about SHAKESPEARE is though it’s structured, it’s INFINITE — full of possibilities, like the Universe — And no matter what, we keep coming back for more to experience Shakespeare’s timeless human expression and undeniable existential connection.

THERE’S A WAY TO DO THIS! There’s a way to perform to Shakespeare and it’s for absolutely everyone. My work is to coach / guide you through your Shakespeare Performance, finding your own delivery of SHAKESPEARE’s iconic characters— while adhering to The Great Writer.

This is my specialty: Shakespeare Technique, Auditioning with Shakespeare, and Focused Storytelling. Let’s get started!

IMAGINATION and WONDER: “Think when we talk of horses, that you see them/ Printing their proud hoofs i’ the receiving earth” - Chorus, HENRY V.   Working from a state of WONDER and STRATEGIC IMAGINATION are the most useful tools I’ve been given as a Shakespearean Actor.  Imagination and Wonder are intoxicating ingredients for both the Entertainer and the Entertained. Doors can’t be shut on our imagination “it will out at the casement; shut that, and ‘twill out at the keyhole; stop that, ‘twill fly with the smoke out at the chimney. . . “ - Rosalind, AS YOU LIKE IT. It is my job as your coach to hand these tools to you and enhance your Shakespeare knowledge and performance.

SESSIONS WITH ME:

  • Shakespeare Performance Technique for beginners and beyond: Iambic Pentameter, Verse, Prose, Breath, Thought, Rhythm . . . basic technique and further tailored to you and your level of experience with Shakespeare.

  • My work is to Deepen an Actor’s Imagination and Personal Connection with the circumstances Shakespeare has presented, finding their unique DELIVERY of the “words, words, words," and, above all, having fun with Shakespeare and your Speech. Shakespeare is funny—even his Tragic Characters may have a sense of humor about their situation. The Character is relishing and enjoying their Speech, lets get you to!

  • Sometimes we just need a way into a Speech— HOW DO I BEGIN? But it's NOT the HOW, it's the WHY!!! Why do you begin speaking, WHY? It’s like cracking a code to start a Shakespeare Speech or dive into a Character. Crack the code of their dilemma, situation, the STORY they are telling in this moment— AND their BEHAVIOR! Cracking the Character is cracking into their behavior and opinion about their situation— how do they feel, what do they say??? This kind of focus helps you GET SPECIFIC! And then an unescapable Character is born and you can just play it!

  • The Monologue is like a short Story, but how to tell it? “Ay there’s the rub!”  Who are these people! We are closer to these Characters than we think. And, good news, it’s all in the TEXT, what a relief!  The challenge lies in understanding WHAT IS BEING SAID, WHAT THE STORY ACTUALLY IS… THEN HAVING AS MUCH FUN AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN WITH IT. Like a short Story, the Monologue has a beginning, middle, and end. It can also be seen as an essay, containing a Thesis statement, defended/explained, and then concluded. Once the backbone of the monologue is understood, then the real fun begins: The DELIVERY. This is where YOU come in. How YOU deliver this Speech has never been seen or heard before— YOUR DELIVERY is why we keep coming back to see new HAMLETS and JULIETS— we’ve never seen yours!

  • THE AUDITION: If the Actor is keyed into The Story, the Character is just how the Story is told—and the Audition is just time to tell The Story.

my EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • MFA in Acting from The New School for Drama where I excelled in Shakespeare, playing ROSALIND, IMOGEN, CLEOPATRA, and ROSALINE. Received upon Graduation the Bob Hope Award for Comedy. I Developed my One-Woman Show, O HAPPY DAGGER, a 30 minute adaptation of ROMEO & JULIET - One woman, Two Characters and the Most Important Love Story of All Time…

  • The British American Drama Academy in London, one undergrad year of Shakespeare study. While training in London, it struck me how my teachers spoke about Shakespeare's Characters as if they knew them. And yet each time someone got up to perform a Speech, it was as if they were meeting them for the first time! I became enchanted with this concept and feeling of being delightfully carried away by each new interpretation while also knowing who the Character is. We will always hear from different ROSALINDS and RICHARDS, but their CHARACTER will always stay the same—someone close to our hearts, yet ever changing before our very eyes.

  • Ten years of Shakespeare with Stag & Lion Theatre Company Upper West Side NYC, roles include: PUCK, ROSALIND, OPHELIA, PORTIA, IMOGEN, MARIA, and MISTRESS FORD and QUICKLY. With Match:Lit, KATERINA and DESDEMONA. And with W.H.A.T. theatre in Cape Cod, HERMIA.

  • Developed and performed 3 One-Woman Adaptations of Shakespeare Plays on Theatre Row and Off-Off B’way venues: O HAPPY DAGGER - ROMEO & JULIET, SHREW - THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, ERROR; THE COMEDY OF - THE COMEDY OF ERRORS playing multiple characters and telling the whole story in either 30 or 60 minutes.

  • TV Role in HBO MAX’s SEARCH PARTY as the recurring “happy-go-lucky” character JUNE.
